What Is AEO? A Plain-English Guide to Answer Engine Optimization

The short answer

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of getting your brand named and linked when people ask an AI assistant for advice. It builds on SEO: AI answers in Google and ChatGPT draw on web pages, so pages that search engines can find and trust are the ones that get cited.

What AEO looks like in real life

Imagine someone types into ChatGPT: “What’s the best project management tool for a five-person design studio?”

Instead of ten blue links, they get one written answer. It names three or four products, says why each might fit, and often shows the web pages it used as sources. If your product is named there, or your page is one of the sources, you win that moment. If not, the reader may never hear of you.

AEO is everything you do to make the first outcome more likely. People also call it GEO (generative engine optimization), AI search optimization or LLM optimization. The goal is the same.

AEO vs SEO: what’s the difference?

SEOAEO
Where you show upGoogle and Bing results pagesWritten answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode
What “winning” meansRanking high so people clickBeing named in the answer or cited as a source
What you measureRankings, clicks, impressionsMentions, citations and share of voice against competitors
How you get thereUseful pages, good structure, links, a site search engines can crawlAll of that, plus clear direct answers, facts that are easy to quote, and mentions on pages AI already trusts

The overlap is large. You don’t have to pick one; good AEO starts with good SEO.

How do AI answers choose their sources?

Nobody outside these companies knows the full recipe, and answers change from day to day. But the two biggest players say clearly what they need from your site:

  • Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says there are no extra requirements, no special schema and no new “AI text files” you need to add. (Google Search Central)
  • ChatGPT needs to be able to crawl you: OpenAI asks sites to allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler. It ranks results using several factors and says placement is not guaranteed. When it searches the web, its answers can include citations that link to the source. (OpenAI Help Center)

In short: if search engines can’t find and trust your page, AI answers are unlikely to cite it.

5 free steps to start with AEO today

You don’t need to buy anything for these. Set aside an hour for the first two; the rest is ongoing.

  1. Write down 10 questions your customers ask before they buy.

Think “best X for Y”, “X vs Y”, “is X worth it” and “how do I…”. Use the words your customers use, not your marketing words.

  2. Ask those questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google.

Note which brands are named and which pages are linked as sources. Those pages show you what the assistants already trust, and where you might get mentioned.

  3. Make sure search engines and AI crawlers can reach your site.

Check that your robots.txt and your host or CDN don’t block Googlebot, Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot, and that your key pages are indexed. Google Search Console shows this for Google for free.

  4. Answer the question at the top of the page.

Put a one- or two-sentence answer right under the heading, phrase headings the way people ask, and use tables for comparisons. Add the date when you checked prices or facts, and link to where they came from. This makes your page easy to quote correctly.

  5. Earn mentions where AI already looks.

If a review site, comparison article or forum thread keeps getting cited for your topic, make sure your product is listed there accurately: send the facts to the editor or answer questions honestly as yourself. Then repeat step 2 every month.

What doesn’t help (and can hurt)

  • Special “AI files” or markup for Google. Google says you don’t need them for its AI features. Spend the time on the page itself.
  • Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI. Text shown to bots but not to people is the kind of trick search engines treat as spam.
  • Fake reviews or made-up stats. They can be quoted back to readers with your name on them, and they break trust fast.
  • Pages made only for AI. Write for a person who has the question. That is what both search engines and assistants are trying to serve.

When is a paid AEO tool worth it?

Checking by hand works for a handful of questions. A tool earns its cost when you want to track dozens of questions every day, across several assistants, and compare yourself with named competitors.

FAQ

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It means making your brand and your pages easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to find, trust and mention when they answer someone’s question.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

For most people, yes. GEO means generative engine optimization, and you will also see “AI search optimization” and “LLM optimization”. They all describe the same goal: showing up in answers written by AI.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search before it can appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so a page that can’t be found in search is unlikely to be cited there.

Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for AEO?

Not for Google. Google says there is no special schema.org markup you need to add and no new machine-readable or AI text files needed to appear in its AI features. Structured data still helps search engines understand a page, as long as it matches what is visible.

How do I appear in ChatGPT search?

OpenAI says sites need to allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler, and that hosts and CDNs should not block OpenAI’s published search-bot IP addresses. Even then, placement is not guaranteed: ChatGPT ranks results using several factors.

How do I know if AI assistants mention my brand?

Start by hand: ask the questions your customers ask in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and note who is named and which links are cited. To track many questions every day, use an AEO tool.
