Best AI SEO Tools (2026): 4 Picks by Budget and Job
This page has no affiliate links right now: every link goes straight to the vendor. If that changes, we'll say so here. How we make money.
AI SEO tools help you find what people search for, write pages that can rank for it, and track how those pages do on Google and in AI answers.
There are hundreds of them. This guide covers four well-known ones that split into two kinds: SEO suites for research and tracking, and content optimizers for writing. For each one we list what the cheapest plan includes, checked on the vendor's own pricing page.
The short answer
If you write your own articles, start with Frase ($39/mo yearly, 7-day free trial) or Surfer ($49/mo yearly). If you need keyword research and rank tracking for a whole site, pick Semrush (free plan, paid from $139/mo) or SE Ranking (from $129/mo, 14-day free trial).

What an AI SEO tool actually does
An AI SEO tool is software that uses AI to help your pages get found on Google and in AI answers. In plain terms, it helps with three jobs:
- Find the words people search for. Keyword research shows which questions and phrases people type, roughly how often, and who already ranks for them.
- Write or improve a page for those words. A content optimizer compares your draft with pages that already rank and suggests topics, terms and questions to cover.
- Track the results. Rank tracking checks where your pages appear for your keywords, and many tools now also check whether ChatGPT or Google's AI answers mention you.
No tool does the ranking for you. They show you where to put your effort; the pages still have to be genuinely useful.
SEO suite or content optimizer: which do you need?
| SEO suite | Content optimizer | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Research keywords and competitors, audit your site, track rankings | Help you plan, write and improve individual articles |
| In this guide | Semrush, SE Ranking | Surfer, Frase |
| Entry price | $129–$139/mo billed monthly | $39–$49/mo |
| Best if you… | Run a business site and need to know what to target and how you're doing | Already know your topics and spend most of your time writing |
Many people end up with one of each. If you can only pay for one, choose the job that takes most of your week.
How we chose
We picked four widely used tools that cover both kinds and publish their prices, then read each one's official pricing page on October 9, 2026. We haven't tested these tools hands-on yet, so we don't rank them against each other. Each pick says who it suits and who should skip it.
Popular tools we haven't covered yet include Ahrefs, Moz and Clearscope. We'll add them once we've checked their plans the same way.

How to choose the right AI SEO tool for you
By budget
| Monthly budget | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | Google Search Console + Semrush free plan | See the searches you already get, and run 10 Semrush reports a day |
| Under $50 | Frase Starter or Surfer Discovery | Help writing pages that can rank; Frase is $39/mo yearly or $49 monthly, Surfer $49/mo yearly |
| $100–$150 | SE Ranking Core or Semrush SEO | Keyword research, site audit and daily rank tracking for your whole site |
| Over $150 | A suite plus a content optimizer | One for research and tracking, one for writing |
By who you are
| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A blogger writing your own posts | Frase or Surfer | Most of your time goes into writing, so get help where you spend it |
| A small business or shop owner | Semrush (free plan first) | One place to see what customers search for and how your site is doing |
| An affiliate marketer | Surfer plus a suite later | Reviews and “best X” pages need depth, which is what a content optimizer helps with; add tracking once pages are live |
| A freelancer or small agency | SE Ranking | 10 projects and 2,000 tracked keywords on the entry plan |
Our suggestions are based on the published plans above, not hands-on testing. All four have more AI features on higher plans; see the notes under each tool.
What about ChatGPT and AI answers?
More people now ask AI assistants for recommendations instead of searching. Getting mentioned there is called AEO, or answer engine optimization. Good SEO still helps, because these assistants draw on pages they can find and trust.
If AI visibility is your main goal, a dedicated tracker can be cheaper than a suite upgrade: Otterly.ai starts at $29/mo. Compare seven of them in our guide to the best AEO tools, or browse every AI SEO & AEO tool we list.
FAQ
What is an AI SEO tool?
An AI SEO tool is software that uses AI to help you get found on Google and, more and more, in AI answers. Most do one or more of three jobs: find the search terms people use, help you write or improve a page for those terms, and track where your pages rank.
Is a free AI SEO tool enough to start?
For a new site, often yes. Google Search Console is free and shows the searches that already bring you visitors. Semrush has a free plan with 1 demo project and 10 reports a day. Pay when you publish regularly and need to track many keywords or write faster.
Will Google penalize content written with AI?
Not for using AI by itself. Google says it rewards helpful, original content however it is made, but using AI to mass-produce pages mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies. Check facts, add your own experience and edit the draft before you publish.
Do I need an SEO suite or a content optimizer?
If you write most of your pages yourself, start with a content optimizer such as Surfer or Frase. If you need to research keywords, watch competitors and track rankings for a whole site, start with a suite such as Semrush or SE Ranking.
What is the cheapest tool in this guide?
On October 9, 2026, Frase Starter was the cheapest at $39/mo billed yearly or $49/mo month to month. Surfer Discovery is also $49/mo, but only on a yearly plan. Semrush is the only one here with a free plan.
Do these tools track ChatGPT and other AI answers too?
Some do. SE Ranking Core lists 100 prompts tracked daily, Frase Starter includes AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI, and Semrush and Surfer track AI answers on higher plans. If AI visibility is your main goal, see our guide to AEO tools.
