The 4 differences that matter
1. Price to get started
ElevenLabs Starter costs $6 a month and already includes a commercial license. Murf’s first paid plan, Creator, is $29 a month, or $19 a month if you pay $228 for a year. If you only need a few voiceovers a month, ElevenLabs is the cheaper way in.
2. How usage is counted
ElevenLabs counts credits: Starter gives 30k a month. Its own plan comparison table lists about 10 minutes of text to speech for the free plan’s 10k credits, which suggests roughly 30 minutes a month on Starter, but check your usage in the app. Murf counts hours of voice generation: 2 hours a month on Creator, or 24 hours for the whole year on the yearly plan, which suits months with uneven workloads.
3. Voice cloning
ElevenLabs includes Instant Voice Cloning from Starter and Professional Voice Cloning from Creator ($22/mo). Murf’s pricing page lists custom voice clones only as an Enterprise add-on. If you want new lines in your own voice, ElevenLabs is the clear fit. Only clone a voice you have permission to use.
4. Where you work
Murf is built around making voiceovers for visual content: every paid plan includes a Canva integration, and Business adds PowerPoint and Google Slides add-ons. ElevenLabs goes wider on audio, with Dubbing Studio from Starter, plus sound effects, music and speech to text, and you add the audio to your project yourself.
What a year costs
List prices for 12 months, before tax:
| Plan | ElevenLabs | Murf AI |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest with commercial use, paid monthly | $72 (Starter, $6 × 12) | $348 (Creator, $29 × 12) |
| Cheapest with commercial use, paid yearly | Annual billing offered; see the pricing page | $228 (Creator yearly) |
| Next plan up, paid monthly | $264 (Creator, $22 × 12) | $1,188 (Business, $99 × 12) |
| Next plan up, paid yearly | See the pricing page | $792 (Business yearly) |
How much audio do you actually need?
Do the sum before you compare plans. One 10-minute YouTube voiceover a week is about 40 minutes of finished audio a month, and you’ll usually generate some lines more than once while you fix wording. Murf Creator’s 2 hours a month covers that comfortably. On ElevenLabs, check how many credits a test script uses in the app, then multiply by your monthly output.
A one-week way to decide
- Pick a real 30-second script from your next project.
- Generate it on both free plans with two or three voices each.
- Listen on your phone, the way your audience will. Keep the tool whose voice you’d publish without wincing, then check its plan covers your monthly minutes.
Which one fits you?
| If you are… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A YouTuber or podcaster on a budget | ElevenLabs | Commercial license and voice cloning from $6/mo |
| A trainer or L&D team making courses | Murf | 200+ voices and slide add-ons on Business |
| A marketer making ads in Canva | Murf | Canva integration on every paid plan |
| A creator publishing in several languages | ElevenLabs | Dubbing Studio from Starter |
| Someone who edits their own recordings | Neither first | Descript puts AI voice inside a video and podcast editor |
What we couldn’t check
We compared published plans. We haven’t tested either tool hands-on yet, so we can’t say whose voices sound more natural for your script or accent. Both have free plans: run the same 30-second script through each and listen before you pay. Note that Murf’s free plan doesn’t allow downloads.
