Grammarly vs QuillBot comes down to one question: do you need help fixing what you wrote, or help rewording it? Grammarly is a writing assistant that checks grammar, clarity and tone while you type. QuillBot is a paraphrasing tool: it rewrites a sentence or paragraph in different words, and adds a grammar checker and summarizer around that.

The short answer

Choose Grammarly to catch mistakes and fix tone everywhere you write. Pro costs $12/mo billed yearly or $30 monthly.

Choose QuillBot to reword, summarize and check plagiarism for less. Premium costs $8.33/mo billed yearly or $19.95 monthly in the US.

Grammarly vs QuillBot pricing

QuillBot is the cheaper of the two on every billing period. Both sell their paid plan monthly, every 3 months or yearly, and both charge far less per month if you pay for a year up front.

12 months of the paid planGrammarly ProQuillBot Premium
Paid yearly$144$99.95
Paid every 3 months (×4)$240$159.80
Paid monthly (×12)$360$239.40

A note on regional pricing. QuillBot shows lower prices in some countries, so the number on your screen may differ from ours. Grammarly says it shows local prices in euros, pounds and rupees at checkout. We list US prices so every page on this site compares like with like.

Grammarly offers a free trial of Pro, and its plans page says it emails you 2 days before the trial ends. We didn’t find a free trial of QuillBot Premium, but QuillBot’s free plan has no time limit.

Grammar and clarity checks

This is Grammarly’s core job. Its free plan catches spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes and shows how your tone comes across. Pro adds full-sentence rewrites you accept with a click and suggestions to make your tone more formal or friendly.

QuillBot’s grammar checker gives basic fixes on the free plan. Premium adds advanced suggestions and tone insights. It works well as a check on text you just paraphrased, but grammar is a supporting feature in QuillBot rather than the main product.

Who wins: Grammarly, if proofreading is the main reason you are paying.

Paraphrasing and rewriting

Paraphrasing means saying the same thing in different words. It is QuillBot’s core job. The free plan rewrites up to 100 words at a time in 2 modes, Standard and Fluency. Premium removes the word limit and gives you 9 built-in modes, such as Formal, Academic and Creative, plus your own custom modes.

Grammarly also rewrites text. Pro rewrites whole sentences and paragraphs, and Grammarly now lists a Paraphraser agent that adjusts writing to sound more creative or professional. Its rewrites are tied to its suggestions as you edit, while QuillBot gives you a dedicated box with modes to switch between.

Who wins: QuillBot, if rewording text is the main job.

Plagiarism, AI detection and summaries

  • Plagiarism checks: both need a paid plan. QuillBot Premium checks up to 25,000 words a month. Grammarly Pro includes plagiarism detection; its plans page doesn’t give a word limit.
  • AI-text detection: Grammarly Pro detects AI-generated text. QuillBot’s AI detector is limited on Free and fully available on Premium.
  • Summaries: QuillBot has a summarizer (1,200 words free, 6,000 on Premium). Grammarly’s plans page doesn’t list one.
  • AI drafting: Grammarly includes AI prompts to draft and outline text, 100 a month free and 2,000 on Pro. QuillBot’s Premium page doesn’t list AI prompts; it lists an AI humanizer that rewrites AI-sounding text, 100 words at a time on Free.

We haven’t tested how accurate either tool’s AI detector is. No AI detector is perfect, so don’t treat a single score as proof that someone used AI.

Where each one works

Grammarly says it works in more than 1 million apps and websites. That includes browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari, Windows and Mac apps, Android, iPhone and iPad apps, and Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Gmail, Outlook and Slack. It supports more than 20 languages.

QuillBot works in Chrome, Edge and Safari, Microsoft Word, Windows and macOS apps, and iOS and Android. Its paraphraser handles 20+ languages. If you mostly write inside one web editor, either will reach it; if you write across many apps all day, Grammarly covers more of them.

Does it make sense to use both?

Yes. The two jobs fit together: reword a clumsy passage in QuillBot, then let Grammarly check the final text as you edit. You don’t have to pay for both to try this. Start with both free plans, and only upgrade the one you hit limits on first.

If you do pay for both yearly at US prices, it costs $243.95 a year ($144 + $99.95). That is less than Grammarly Pro alone billed monthly for a year ($360).
