Zendesk Alternatives (2026): 6 Options Compared on Price per Agent and AI Costs

This page has no affiliate links right now: every link goes straight to the vendor. How we make money.

Zendesk is a customer service platform priced per agent, from $19 a month billed yearly for email ticketing to $55 for messaging and live chat, with AI resolutions billed on top. Here are six Zendesk alternatives, with prices for a five-person team and what AI answers cost on each.

The short answer

For a small email-first team, pick Help Scout (free plan; $25/user/mo yearly). If you want AI to answer first, try Intercom ($0.99 per Fin outcome). Freshdesk is the most Zendesk-like desk. On a tight budget, Tidio costs $24.17/mo for the team. For WhatsApp, look at respond.io or SleekFlow.

Zendesk pricing in one table

A help desk is software that collects customer questions from email, chat and other channels into one shared queue, so a team can answer, assign and track them. Zendesk is one of the best-known help desks. Every plan is priced per agent, there is no free plan, and the cheapest plan covers email only.

Zendesk planPer agent, billed yearlyPer agent, billed monthlyWhat it adds
Support Team$19$25Email ticketing, routing, automations, prebuilt dashboards
Suite Team$55$69Adds messaging, live chat, voice, 1 help center, AI agents (5 automated resolutions per agent a month)
Suite Professional$115$149Adds skills-based routing, IVR, up to 5 help centers (10 automated resolutions per agent a month)
Suite Enterprise + CopilotSalesSalesTalk to sales

From the Zendesk pricing page (US, October 23, 2026). Automated resolutions beyond those included cost $2.00 each pay-as-you-go, or $1.50 committed. Copilot is an add-on.

Why teams look for a Zendesk alternative

  • The price jumps with channels. Support Team ($19/agent/mo yearly) is email ticketing only. Messaging and live chat need Suite Team at $55, nearly three times as much per agent.
  • AI is billed on top. Suite Team includes 5 automated resolutions per agent a month; each extra one costs $2.00 pay-as-you-go.
  • No free plan. Small teams can’t start for $0, while Help Scout and Tidio both have free plans.
  • More than a small team needs. Routing, IVR, multiple help centers and light agents are built for larger support teams.

None of this makes Zendesk a poor choice. Its Suite plans are built for growing teams that need tickets, voice and messaging in one system with room to scale.

What a five-person team would pay

Most Zendesk alternatives also charge per seat, but some charge by conversations or contacts instead. This table multiplies each tool’s published entry price by five people. It leaves out tax and AI usage.

What AI answers cost on each tool

AI agents are where Zendesk bills can grow fastest, and each vendor counts AI differently: per resolution, per outcome, per session or per conversation.

ToolAI priceIncluded
Zendesk$2.00 per automated resolution pay-as-you-go ($1.50 committed)5 per agent a month on Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional
Intercom$0.99 per Fin outcomeNone listed; charged at most once per conversation
Help Scout$0.75 per Envoy resolution3 months of free AI answers for new accounts
Freshdesk$49 per 100 extra Freddy AI Agent sessionsFirst 500 sessions on every plan
TidioLyro add-on from $32.50/mo billed yearly for 50 AI conversationsFirst 50 Lyro conversations free (lifetime)

A “session” or “conversation” can be counted even when the AI doesn’t solve the question; a “resolution” or “outcome” usually counts only when it does. Read each vendor’s definition before comparing totals.

How we chose

We picked tools that can replace at least part of Zendesk: a shared support inbox, tickets, live chat or chat-app support. We read each pricing page on October 23, 2026 from a US connection and compared published prices, pricing models and AI fees only. We haven’t tested these tools hands-on yet, so we don’t claim any of them answers customers better than Zendesk.

Freshdesk isn’t in our tool directory yet, so it has no profile page here. Gorgias, Front and HubSpot Service Hub also come up in searches but aren’t covered; Gorgias’s pricing page showed no plan prices when we checked. ManyChat isn’t a help desk, but if your questions come mostly through Instagram DMs, see our ManyChat alternatives and Tidio vs ManyChat.

Help Scout: best for small teams that mostly answer email

Shared inbox and help desk for email, live chat, SMS and social messages, with a knowledge base, AI drafting help and the Envoy AI agent priced per resolution.

Starts at
$25/user/mo billed yearly ($30 billed monthly), Standard
AI pricing
Envoy AI agent: $0.75 per resolution
Free option
Free plan (5 users, 100 contacts/mo); 15-day trial

Compared with Zendesk: Help Scout is a shared inbox and help desk for email, live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, with a knowledge base (Docs). Standard costs $25 per user a month billed yearly, which sits between Zendesk Support Team ($19, email only) and Suite Team ($55, adds messaging and live chat). Its AI agent is billed only when a customer gets an AI answer and doesn’t ask for more help.

Who it’s for: You have 2 to 25 people answering customers, mostly by email, and Zendesk feels like more setup than you need.

Skip it if: You run a large team that needs phone support, IVR or skills-based routing. Zendesk lists those on its Suite plans, so check whether Help Scout covers your setup in the trial.

Intercom: best for teams that want an AI agent to answer first

Screenshot of the Intercom homepage

Helpdesk with a shared inbox, ticketing, Messenger live chat and help center, built around the Fin AI Agent, which is billed per successful outcome.

Starts at
$29/seat/mo billed yearly, Essential (list price)
AI pricing
Fin AI Agent: $0.99 per outcome
Free option
Free trial; no free plan

Compared with Zendesk: Intercom is a help desk built around its Fin AI Agent: Messenger live chat, a shared inbox, ticketing and a help center on every plan. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome and is charged at most once per conversation, and not at all if it hands off to a human. That is about half of Zendesk’s $2.00 pay-as-you-go price per automated resolution. On October 23, 2026 the pricing page showed Essential at $19 per seat for new customers, 35% off the $29 list price.

Who it’s for: You expect AI to handle a large share of simple questions and want live chat on your website and app.

Skip it if: You need monthly billing or want a fixed bill. We couldn’t confirm Intercom’s monthly-billing prices, and AI costs grow with volume.

Freshdesk: best for a per-agent ticketing desk like Zendesk

Starts at
$19/agent/mo billed yearly, Growth
AI pricing
Freddy AI Agent: first 500 sessions included, then $49 per 100 sessions
Free option
14-day trial (Enterprise features); no free plan listed

Compared with Zendesk: Freshdesk, from Freshworks, works much like Zendesk: per-agent plans for ticketing, a shared inbox, a customer portal and a knowledge base. Growth lists the same $19 per agent a month billed yearly as Zendesk Support Team, and both are email-first at that price. Freshdesk includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions on every plan. Pro is $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent a month billed yearly.

Who it’s for: You like how Zendesk works but want to compare a very similar per-agent help desk side by side in a trial.

Skip it if: You need to compare monthly-billing prices. Freshworks’ pricing page showed yearly prices only when we checked, and we haven’t verified how its AI sessions are counted over time.

Tidio: best for online stores on a tight budget

Screenshot of the Tidio homepage
Tidio homepage, captured Oct 22, 2026. The live site may look different.

AI pricing
Lyro AI Agent add-on: from $32.50/mo (50 AI conversations)
Free option
Free plan (50 conversations, 10 seats); 7-day trial

Compared with Zendesk: Tidio is live chat and a help desk for small businesses. It prices by billable conversations (ones your team replied to), not per agent: Starter is $24.17 a month billed yearly for 100 conversations and 10 seats. For a five-person team that is far below any per-agent plan. Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and email come into the same inbox.

Who it’s for: Most questions start in your website chat or online store, and you have a small team on a small budget.

Skip it if: You handle a high volume of tickets with SLAs and complex routing. Tidio prices by conversation, and its custom-volume Plus plan starts at $300/mo plus usage.

Team inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, email and calls, with AI Agents, workflows and broadcasts, priced by monthly active contacts.

$79/mo billed yearly ($99/mo billed monthly), Starter at 1,000 contacts
AI pricing
AI Agents from Growth ($159/mo yearly); AI credits included
Free option
7-day free trial; no free plan

Compared with Zendesk: respond.io is a shared inbox for chat apps, with a strong focus on WhatsApp, plus Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, email and calls. It prices by monthly active contacts (people you messaged that month), not per agent. Broadcasts, workflow automation and AI Agents start on Growth at $159 a month billed yearly ($199 monthly). Meta’s WhatsApp fees are charged on top.

Who it’s for: Most of your customers message you on WhatsApp and you want sales and support in one chat inbox.

Skip it if: Your support is mostly email tickets and a help center. respond.io’s pricing page doesn’t list ticketing or a knowledge base.

SleekFlow: best for many chat apps on one plan

Screenshot of the SleekFlow homepage
SleekFlow homepage, captured Oct 22, 2026. The live site may look different.

Omnichannel team inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, WeChat, LINE, Telegram and SMS, with a flow builder, broadcasts, payment links and AI agents on Pro and above.

Starts at
$49/mo billed yearly ($588/yr), Essential
AI pricing
AI inbox co-pilot on Essential; AI agents from Pro ($109/mo yearly)
Free option
7-day Pro trial, no credit card

Compared with Zendesk: SleekFlow is a team inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, WeChat, LINE, Telegram and SMS. Essential includes 3 seats and starts at 500 monthly active contacts; Pro ($109 a month billed yearly) includes 10 users and AI agents. It says plans and pricing vary by location, and WhatsApp number hosting is $15 a month plus Meta’s fees.

Who it’s for: You sell and support across several chat apps, and want one flat team plan instead of per-agent seats.

Skip it if: You need an email ticketing desk with SLAs and a help center. SleekFlow is a chat inbox first.

How to choose and switch in four steps

  1. List your channels. Mostly email? Help Scout or Freshdesk. Website and app chat with AI first? Intercom or Tidio. Mostly WhatsApp? respond.io or SleekFlow.
  2. Price it on your team and volume. Seat-based tools (Zendesk, Help Scout, Intercom, Freshdesk) grow with your team. Tidio grows with conversations; respond.io and SleekFlow with contacts.
  3. Add AI costs. Estimate how many questions an AI agent could close each month and multiply by each vendor’s AI price above.
  4. Plan the move. Before you cancel, export your Zendesk tickets, macros and help center articles, and ask the new vendor during the trial how it imports them. We haven’t checked each vendor’s import tools.

Every tool here has a free plan or a 7–15 day trial, so connect one real inbox and run it for a week before you switch.

When to stay with Zendesk

  • You run a large team that needs voice, IVR, skills-based routing or several help centers in one system.
  • You already have years of tickets, macros and reports in Zendesk, and a move would cost more than it saves.
  • You only need email tickets: Support Team at $19 per agent a month billed yearly matches Freshdesk Growth and is below Help Scout Standard.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Zendesk?

It depends on your team. For a small email-first team, Help Scout is the closest simple help desk and has a free plan. If you want an AI agent to answer first, Intercom’s Fin costs $0.99 per outcome. Freshdesk is the most similar per-agent ticketing desk. We haven’t tested these tools hands-on; this is based on published plans checked October 23, 2026.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Zendesk for small businesses?

Yes. Help Scout has a free plan for 5 users and 100 contacts a month, and Tidio has a free plan with 50 conversations and 10 seats. Tidio Starter is $24.17/mo billed yearly for the whole team, while Zendesk Suite Team is $55 per agent a month billed yearly. Freshdesk Growth lists $19 per agent, the same as Zendesk Support Team.

Is Help Scout better than Zendesk?

Neither is better for everyone. Help Scout is simpler and starts with a free plan; Standard is $25 per user a month billed yearly with email, chat and social messages. Zendesk lists more for larger teams on its Suite plans, such as voice, IVR and skills-based routing. Help Scout’s AI answers cost $0.75 per resolution versus Zendesk’s $2.00.

Is Intercom better than Zendesk?

Intercom suits teams that want AI to answer first: its Fin AI Agent costs $0.99 per outcome, about half Zendesk’s $2.00 pay-as-you-go automated resolution. Seats start at $29 per month billed yearly ($19 for new customers on October 23, 2026). Zendesk has an email-only plan from $19 per agent and publishes monthly prices; we couldn’t confirm Intercom’s.

Does Zendesk have a free plan?

No. Zendesk offers a 14-day free trial of Suite Professional, and its pricing page mentions a startups program with a 6-month trial for up to 50 agents. If you need a free help desk, Help Scout (5 users, 100 contacts a month) and Tidio (50 conversations a month) have free plans.

How much does Zendesk cost per agent?

On October 23, 2026 Zendesk listed Support Team at $19 per agent a month billed yearly ($25 monthly), Suite Team at $55 ($69), and Suite Professional at $115 ($149). Suite Enterprise is priced through sales. Automated resolutions beyond those included cost $2.00 each pay-as-you-go or $1.50 committed.

What is an automated resolution?

An automated resolution is a customer conversation that an AI agent closes without a human stepping in. Zendesk, Intercom (which calls it an outcome) and Help Scout bill AI this way, so the cost depends on how many questions the AI actually solves, not on how many agents you have.
