Descript Alternatives (2026): 3 Options Picked by the Job You Need Done
This page has no affiliate links right now: every link goes straight to the vendor. How we make money.
Descript is a video and audio editor that transcribes your recording, so you edit the video by editing the text. It also adds AI voices, noise removal and an AI co-editor. The best Descript alternative depends on which of those jobs you need: AI voices, scripted voiceovers, or AI-generated video.
The short answer
For AI voices, cloning and dubbing, try ElevenLabs (from $6/mo). For voiceovers read from a script, pick Murf AI ($19/mo billed yearly). To generate AI video instead of editing footage, use Runway ($12/mo billed yearly). None of them edits video by transcript.
Descript pricing in brief
Descript counts usage in media hours and AI credits. A media hour is one hour of audio or video you upload or record; it counts every file, not just the final cut. AI credits pay for AI features such as the Underlord co-editor.
The free plan gives 1 media hour a month, 100 one-time AI credits and 720p exports with a watermark. Hobbyist is $24/mo billed monthly or $16/mo billed yearly, with 10 media hours, 400 AI credits, 1080p exports and custom voice clones. Creator is $35/mo or $24/mo yearly for 30 media hours and 4K. Business is $65/mo or $50/mo yearly per editor.
Why people look for a Descript alternative
- Media hours run out. Raw footage, retakes and guest tracks all count. Hobbyist’s 10 hours can go fast on a weekly video show.
- No top-ups on Hobbyist. Only Creator and Business can buy extra media hours or AI credits.
- A different job. Some people only use Descript for AI voices or narration, and a voice tool is built for that.
None of this makes Descript a poor choice. Text-based editing, Studio Sound and filler-word removal in one app is what sets it apart from the tools below. The question is which part you actually use.

Pick by the Descript job you want to replace

What a year costs
Plans bill in different units, so this table shows the cheapest paid plan for each tool over 12 months.
| Plan | Math | Year one | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Descript Hobbyist, billed yearly | $16 × 12 | $192 | 10 media hours a month, 1080p, no watermark |
| Descript Creator, billed yearly | $24 × 12 | $288 | 30 media hours a month, 4K export |
| ElevenLabs Starter, billed monthly | $6 × 12 | $72 | About 30 minutes of speech a month |
| Murf AI Creator, billed yearly | $19 × 12 | $228 | 24 hours of voice generation a year |
| Runway Standard, billed yearly | $12 × 12 | $144 | 625 credits a month, no watermarks |
List prices before tax. ElevenLabs Starter is a monthly plan, so we multiplied the monthly price; on October 16, 2026 its pricing page also showed a short first-month promotion, which we left out.
The cheapest line isn’t the best deal unless it does your job. $72 a year of ElevenLabs buys about 30 minutes of speech a month, not an editor.
How we chose
We picked tools that replace one of Descript’s main jobs and that we’ve already profiled with checked prices. We read the Descript, ElevenLabs and Runway pricing pages on October 16, 2026. Murf AI’s page loads its prices in the browser, so its numbers come from our October 10, 2026 check. We compared published prices, limits and free plans only. We haven’t tested these tools hands-on yet.
Editors that also cut video by editing the transcript, such as Riverside, Podcastle, VEED and Kapwing, come up often in searches for Descript alternatives. They aren’t covered here because we haven’t checked their plans yet.
ElevenLabs: best for AI voices, voice clones and dubbing

AI audio platform for lifelike text to speech, voice cloning, dubbing, sound effects and music.
- Starts at
- $6/mo billed monthly for Starter
- Free option
- Free plan: 10k credits a month (about 10 minutes of speech), no commercial license
Compared with Descript: Descript bundles AI speech with custom voice clones into an editor. ElevenLabs is a voice platform first. Starter ($6/mo) includes 30k credits, about 30 minutes of speech, plus instant voice cloning and a commercial license. Its pricing page also lists Dubbing Studio and 20 Studio projects on Starter. Dubbing translates audio and video into 90+ languages, and speech to text transcribes 90+ languages.
Who it’s for: You mostly used Descript for AI voices: fixing a line with a clone of your voice, narrating from a script, or translating a video into other languages.
Skip it if: You need to cut and edit your own recordings. ElevenLabs’ pricing page doesn’t describe a transcript-based video editor like Descript’s.

Murf AI: best for scripted voiceovers for videos, courses and slides

AI voiceover studio with 200+ voices for videos, presentations, e-learning and ads, plus a text-to-speech API.
- Starts at
- $29/mo billed monthly for Creator ($19/mo billed yearly)
- Free option
- Free plan: 10 minutes of voice generation, no downloads, no commercial rights
Compared with Descript: Descript starts from your recording. Murf starts from your script. Its Studio turns text into a voiceover with 200+ voices, and you can change pitch, speed, pauses and pronunciation down to a single word. Creator includes 2 hours of voice generation a month (24 hours a year on yearly billing), downloads and commercial rights, and works with Canva.
Who it’s for: You don’t record yourself. You write scripts for explainer videos, e-learning or presentations and want an AI voice to read them.
Skip it if: You edit podcasts or interviews, or need noise removal and filler-word cuts. Murf is a voice tool, not an audio or video editor.

Runway: best for generating AI video instead of editing footage

AI creative suite for generating and editing video, images and audio with Runway's own Gen-4.5 video model and other models, on the web, iPhone and Android, plus an API for developers.
- Starts at

Paid plans add music, voice and sound-effect generation, and Pro includes one custom voice clone. Runway’s pricing page doesn’t mention transcript editing.
Who it’s for: You want AI-made B-roll, short clips or ad visuals, and Descript’s stock library and AI tools aren’t enough.
Skip it if: You need to edit a long talking-head video or podcast. Standard’s credits cover under a minute of Gen-4.5 video a month.

Free Descript alternatives: what you really get
“Free” means something different on each plan. Read the limits before you build a project on one.
- Descript Free: 1 media hour a month and 100 one-time AI credits. Exports are 720p with a watermark, and voice clones are limited.
- ElevenLabs Free: 10k credits a month, about 10 minutes of speech. No commercial license is listed.
- Murf AI Free: 10 minutes of voice generation. You can’t download the audio or use it commercially, so it’s for trying voices.
- Runway Free: 125 credits once, not every month, on a selection of models.
The free plans are fine for testing. For anything you publish, plan on a paid tier.
When to stay with Descript
- You record and edit your own podcast or videos, and editing by transcript saves you time.
- You want noise removal (Studio Sound), filler-word cuts, clips for social media and remote recording in one app.
- You use a voice clone to patch a few words in an edit, which is included from Hobbyist ($16/mo billed yearly).

FAQ
Is there a free alternative to Descript?
ElevenLabs, Murf AI and Runway all have free plans, but each covers only part of what Descript does. ElevenLabs Free gives about 10 minutes of speech a month without a commercial license. Murf Free gives 10 minutes of voice generation with no downloads. Runway Free gives 125 one-time credits. Descript’s own free plan includes 1 media hour a month with 720p, watermarked exports.
Which Descript alternative also edits video by editing the transcript?
None of the three tools on this page describes a transcript-based video editor on its pricing page. If editing by text is the reason you use Descript, look at dedicated editors such as Riverside, Podcastle, VEED or Kapwing. We haven’t checked their plans yet, so we don’t list their prices here.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Descript?
For AI voice alone, yes: ElevenLabs Starter is $6/mo billed monthly, about $72 a year, against $192 a year for Descript Hobbyist billed yearly. For editing your own recordings, the tools here aren’t like-for-like replacements, so compare features first. Prices checked October 16, 2026.
Is ElevenLabs better than Descript for voice cloning?
We haven’t tested them side by side. On paper, ElevenLabs includes instant voice cloning from Starter ($6/mo) and professional cloning from Creator ($22/mo). Descript includes custom voice clones on every paid plan, from $16/mo billed yearly, and lets you use the clone inside its editor. Pick ElevenLabs if the voice is the product; pick Descript if the voice fixes your edits.
Is Descript worth paying for?
If you record and edit podcasts or videos every week, its text-based editing, Studio Sound and filler-word removal cover jobs the voice and video generators here don’t. Watch the limits: media hours count all the media you upload, and only Creator and Business can buy extra hours or AI credits.
