Intercom vs Zendesk (2026): Which Support Platform Fits Your Team?

This page has no affiliate links right now: every link goes straight to the vendor. How we make money.
Intercom vs Zendesk (or Zendesk vs Intercom) is a choice between two customer service platforms that now overlap a lot. Intercom is a helpdesk built around live chat and Fin, its AI agent. Zendesk is a ticketing system that grew into messaging, voice and AI. The biggest differences are price structure and where each one is strongest.
The short answer
Choose Intercom if most questions come through chat on your website or app and you want AI to answer first. Seats start at $29/mo billed annually; Fin costs $0.99 per outcome.
Choose Zendesk if you run on email tickets or phone. It starts at $19 per agent a month billed yearly.

From each vendor’s pricing page, read from a US connection on October 23, 2026, plus our tool profiles checked October 22, 2026. List prices in US dollars before tax. A seat (Intercom) and an agent (Zendesk) both mean one teammate who answers customers.
Intercom vs Zendesk pricing
Both charge per teammate, then add a fee for each question the AI solves on its own.
Intercom has three plans billed annually: Essential ($29 per seat a month), Advanced ($85) and Expert ($132). On October 23, 2026 the pricing page showed Essential at $19 for new customers, 35% off the list price. The page has a monthly-billing switch but did not show different prices for it, so we can’t confirm what monthly billing costs.
Zendesk lists four plans. Support Team costs $19 per agent a month billed yearly ($25 monthly) and covers email ticketing. Suite Team is $55 yearly ($69 monthly) and adds messaging, live chat, social channels, telephony and a help center. Suite Professional is $115 ($149 monthly). Suite Enterprise is priced by sales.
What a year of seats costs
Here is the seat cost alone, billed yearly, before AI fees and tax. Each Intercom plan sits next to the Zendesk plan with similar channels.
| Plan (billed yearly) | 3 agents a year | 10 agents a year |
|---|---|---|
| Zendesk Support Team (email tickets only) | $684 | $2,280 |
| Intercom Essential, new-customer price ($19) | $684 | $2,280 |
| Intercom Essential, list price ($29) | $1,044 | $3,480 |
| Zendesk Suite Team (chat, messaging, voice) | $1,980 | $6,600 |
| Intercom Advanced (workflows, team inboxes) | $3,060 | $10,200 |
| Zendesk Suite Professional | $4,140 | $13,800 |
| Intercom Expert | $4,752 | $15,840 |
Our arithmetic: price per seat × agents × 12, from list prices on October 23, 2026. Paying Zendesk monthly instead adds about 25% to its yearly price (for example $69 instead of $55 on Suite Team).
AI agents: Fin vs Zendesk AI agents
An AI agent is a bot that answers customers on its own, using your help articles, and passes the chat to a person when it can’t help. Both platforms bill these answers by result, not by message.
Intercom Fin costs from $0.99 per outcome, with no outcomes included in the seat price. Intercom’s profile terms (checked October 22) say an outcome is charged at most once per conversation, and not at all if Fin can’t answer or the customer asks for a human. Fin can answer chat, email and phone, and Intercom also sells it on top of another help desk with no Intercom seats.
Zendesk AI agents come with every plan. Support Team and Suite Team include 5 automated resolutions per agent a month, and Suite Professional includes 10. An automated resolution is a customer request the AI solved without a human. Extra ones cost $2.00 each pay-as-you-go, or $1.50 each if you commit in advance.
Example: 300 AI answers a month
| Team | Intercom (Fin) | Zendesk (pay-as-you-go) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 agents | 300 × $0.99 = $297 a month | 15 included, 285 × $2.00 = $570 a month ($427.50 committed) |
| 10 agents | 300 × $0.99 = $297 a month | 50 included, 250 × $2.00 = $500 a month ($375 committed) |
Add seats and the full monthly bill for 3 agents with 300 AI answers is about $384 on Intercom Essential at list price ($354 at the new-customer price), versus about $735 on Zendesk Suite Team pay-as-you-go. A small team that leans on AI pays less on Intercom; a larger team with few AI answers can stay inside Zendesk’s included resolutions.
Our arithmetic from list prices on October 23, 2026. “Outcome” and “automated resolution” are each vendor’s own definition and may not count the same chats. We haven’t compared answer quality hands-on.
For human agents, Intercom sells Copilot (AI that drafts replies) at $29 per agent a month, free for 10 conversations per agent a month. Zendesk lists Copilot at $50 per agent a month paid yearly, on Professional and higher plans.
Live chat, ticketing and help center
Live chat and messaging
Every Intercom plan includes Messenger, its chat widget for websites and apps, plus email, in-app messages, banners and tooltips. WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go. On Zendesk, live chat and messaging start with Suite Team; Support Team has none. Suite Team also adds social channels such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and Zendesk notes extra fees apply for WhatsApp.
Ticketing
A ticket is a customer request your team can assign, track and close. Zendesk is built around tickets: routing, automations, triggers and pre-written replies come on the entry plan, and Suite Professional adds skills-based routing and an IVR phone menu. Intercom includes a shared inbox and ticketing on Essential; multiple team inboxes, round-robin assignment and the workflow builder need Advanced ($85).
Help center and voice
Intercom’s public help center comes with Essential, and private or multilingual help centers need Advanced. Zendesk includes 1 help center on Suite Team and up to 5 on Suite Professional. For phone support, Zendesk has built-in telephony from Suite Team (numbers and minutes are add-ons). Intercom lists phone as a pay-as-you-go channel.
Who should pick which
Intercom
Who it’s for: SaaS companies, apps and online businesses where customers chat on the website or in the product, and teams that want an AI agent to take the first reply with a clear per-outcome price.
Skip it if: you need monthly billing with a published price, built-in phone lines, or a predictable bill; Fin fees rise with every question it solves.
Zendesk
Who it’s for: growing support teams that handle email, phone and messaging as tickets, need several help centers or many read-only teammates, and want monthly or yearly billing.
Skip it if: you only need website chat for a small team, since live chat starts at $55 per agent a month on Suite Team, or you expect many AI answers, since extras cost $2.00 each pay-as-you-go.
| If you are… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A SaaS team answering users inside the app | Intercom | Messenger and Fin on every plan |
| An email-first team of 3 on a tight budget | Zendesk | Support Team from $19 per agent, yearly |
| A team that takes phone calls | Zendesk | Telephony built in from Suite Team |
| A small team wanting AI to answer most chats | Intercom | $0.99 per Fin outcome vs $2.00 per extra resolution |
| A one- or two-person shop | Neither first | Help Scout and Tidio have free plans |
How we compared them
We compared published plans, limits and AI fees from each vendor’s pricing page, read from a US connection on October 23, 2026, and our tool profiles checked a day earlier. We haven’t used either platform hands-on yet, so we can’t rate setup time, AI answer quality or vendor support. Both offer 14-day trials: run one real week of your own tickets through each before you sign a yearly contract.
Cheaper options
If both feel heavy, Help Scout is an email-first shared inbox with a free plan and AI answers at $0.75 per resolution, and Tidio is website live chat with a free plan and an optional Lyro AI add-on. FAQ
Is Intercom better than Zendesk?
Neither is better for everyone. Intercom suits teams whose customers mostly chat on a website or app and who want an AI agent to answer first. Zendesk suits teams that run on tickets across email, phone and messaging and want monthly billing or built-in voice. Compare them on the channel most of your questions arrive through.
Which is cheaper, Intercom or Zendesk?
For email-only support, Zendesk Support Team is cheapest at $19 per agent a month billed yearly. With live chat included, Intercom Essential ($29 list, $19 for new customers) costs less than Zendesk Suite Team ($55). Is Intercom a help desk or a live chat tool?
Both. Every Intercom plan includes Messenger, its live chat widget for websites and apps, plus a shared inbox, ticketing and a public help center. Its pricing page leads with the Fin AI agent, which can also be bought on its own for another help desk.
