Intercom Alternatives (2026): 6 Options Compared on Seat Price and AI Costs
This page has no affiliate links right now: every link goes straight to the vendor. How we make money.
Intercom is a help desk built around its Fin AI Agent, priced per seat from $29 a month billed yearly, with Fin billed from $0.99 per outcome on top. Here are six Intercom alternatives, with what a five-person team would pay and how each one charges for AI answers.
The short answer
For a small email-first team, pick Help Scout (free plan; AI at $0.75 per resolution). For voice and large-team routing, Zendesk. Freshdesk includes 500 AI sessions. On a tight budget, Tidio costs $24.17/mo for the team. For WhatsApp, look at respond.io or SleekFlow.
Intercom pricing in one table
An AI agent for customer service is software that answers customer questions on its own, from your help articles and data, and passes the conversation to a person when it can’t help. Intercom sells seats for its help desk and bills its AI agent, Fin, per outcome. It has no free plan.
| Intercom plan | Per seat a month | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | $29 ($19 for new customers on October 23, 2026) | Messenger live chat, shared inbox and ticketing, public help center, basic automation |
| Advanced | $85 | Adds workflow automation builder, multiple team inboxes, round robin, multilingual help center, 20 free Lite seats |
| Expert | $132 | Adds SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and help center, 50 free Lite seats |
| Fin AI Agent | From $0.99 per outcome | On every plan, or on its own with another help desk (no seats required) |
From the Intercom pricing page (US, October 23, 2026). Seat prices are billed yearly; we couldn’t confirm monthly-billing prices. Copilot is $29 per agent a month; WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go.
Why teams look for an Intercom alternative
- Two bills in one. You pay per seat and then per Fin outcome, so the AI part of the bill grows with your conversation volume.
- The $19 price is a promotion. On October 23, 2026 Essential showed $19 per seat for new customers, 35% off the $29 list price. Budget on the list price.
- No free plan. Small teams can’t start for $0, while Help Scout and Tidio both have free plans.
- Channels cost extra. The pricing page lists WhatsApp, SMS and phone as pay-as-you-go.
None of this makes Intercom a poor choice. Fin’s $0.99 per outcome is below Zendesk’s $2.00 pay-as-you-go resolution, and every plan includes live chat, a shared inbox, ticketing and a help center.

What a five-person team would pay
Intercom, Zendesk, Help Scout and Freshdesk charge per seat; Tidio, respond.io and SleekFlow charge per team, by conversations or contacts. This table multiplies each published entry price by five people where pricing is per seat. It leaves out tax and AI usage.
| Plan | 5 people, billed yearly | 5 people, billed monthly | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Essential | $145/mo | Not confirmed | $95/mo at the $19 new-customer price; Fin billed per outcome |
| Intercom Advanced | $425/mo | Not confirmed | Workflow builder, multiple inboxes |
| Zendesk Suite Team | $275/mo | $345/mo | Messaging, live chat, voice, AI agents (Support Team, email only: $95/mo) |

| SleekFlow Pro | $109/mo | Not shown | 10 users, 500 monthly active contacts, AI agents |
Per-seat price × 5, from pricing pages checked October 23, 2026. “Not shown” means the page showed yearly prices only; “Not confirmed” means we couldn’t verify Intercom’s monthly price. Tidio, respond.io and SleekFlow prices rise with conversations or contacts, so check your own volume.
AI agent costs: Fin vs the alternatives
Fin is often the reason teams pick Intercom, and the reason bills change from month to month. Each vendor counts AI differently: per outcome, per resolution, per session or per conversation.
| AI agent | Price | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Intercom Fin | From $0.99 per outcome | None listed; charged at most once per conversation, not when Fin hands off to a human |
| Zendesk | $2.00 per automated resolution pay-as-you-go ($1.50 committed) | 5–10 per agent a month, depending on plan |
| Help Scout Envoy | $0.75 per resolution | 3 months of free AI answers for new accounts |
| Freshdesk Freddy | $49 per 100 extra AI Agent sessions | First 500 sessions on every plan |
| Tidio Lyro | Add-on from $32.50/mo billed yearly for 50 AI conversations | First 50 Lyro conversations free (lifetime) |
As a simple example, 200 AI-solved conversations a month would cost $198 with Fin ($0.99 each), $150 with Help Scout Envoy ($0.75 each) and up to $400 with Zendesk at $2.00 pay-as-you-go, before Zendesk’s included resolutions. These are list prices multiplied out, not quotes.
A “session” or “conversation” can be counted even when the AI doesn’t solve the question; an “outcome” or “resolution” usually counts only when it does. Read each vendor’s definition before comparing totals.
How we chose
We picked tools that can replace at least part of Intercom: a shared support inbox, live chat, tickets, an AI agent or chat-app support. We read each pricing page on October 23, 2026 from a US connection and compared published prices, pricing models and AI fees only. We haven’t tested these tools hands-on yet, so we don’t claim any of them answers customers better than Intercom.
Freshdesk isn’t in our tool directory yet, so it has no profile page here. Crisp, HelpCrunch, Front and Gorgias also come up in searches but aren’t covered. ManyChat isn’t a help desk, but if your questions come mostly through Instagram DMs, see our ManyChat alternatives. Already comparing Zendesk too? See our Zendesk alternatives.

How to choose and switch in four steps
- List your channels. Mostly email? Help Scout or Freshdesk. Phone and many teams? Zendesk. Website chat on a small budget? Tidio. Mostly WhatsApp? respond.io or SleekFlow.
- Price it on your team and volume. Seat-based tools (Intercom, Zendesk, Help Scout, Freshdesk) grow with your team. Tidio grows with conversations; respond.io and SleekFlow with contacts.
- Add AI costs. Look at how many conversations Fin resolves for you now and multiply by each vendor’s AI price above.
- Plan the move. Before you cancel, export your Intercom conversations, contacts and help center articles, and ask the new vendor during the trial how it imports them. We haven’t checked each vendor’s import tools.
Every tool here has a free plan or a 7–15 day trial, so connect one real inbox and run it for a week before you switch.
When to stay with Intercom
- Fin resolves a large share of your conversations, and at $0.99 per outcome it costs less per answer than Zendesk’s $2.00 pay-as-you-go resolution.
- You rely on in-app chat, banners and tooltips for a web or mobile product; Intercom says these are unlimited on all plans.
- You want to keep your help desk but change the AI: Intercom sells Fin on its own for other help desks, such as Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk, without Intercom seats.

FAQ
What is a cheaper alternative to Intercom?
Help Scout and Tidio both have free plans, which Intercom doesn’t. Help Scout Standard is $25 per user a month billed yearly and Freshdesk Growth $19 per agent, against Intercom Essential’s $29 list price. Tidio Starter is $24.17 a month billed yearly for the whole team. Prices checked October 23, 2026; we haven’t tested these tools hands-on.
Is Zendesk better than Intercom?
Neither is better for everyone. Zendesk lists more for large teams, such as voice, IVR and skills-based routing, and publishes monthly prices. Intercom bills AI less per answer: $0.99 per Fin outcome versus Zendesk’s $2.00 pay-as-you-go automated resolution. Zendesk’s cheapest plan with live chat, Suite Team, is $55 per agent a month billed yearly.
How much does Intercom Fin cost per resolution?
On October 23, 2026 Intercom’s pricing page listed Fin AI Agent from $0.99 per outcome. Intercom charges it at most once per conversation and not when Fin hands off to a human. Fin can also run on another help desk without Intercom seats. For comparison, Help Scout charges $0.75 and Zendesk $2.00 per resolution.
Does Intercom have a free plan?
No. Intercom offers a free trial but lists no free plan; seats start at $29 per month billed yearly on Essential ($19 for new customers when we checked). Its pricing page says live chat, support email and in-app chats are unlimited on all plans. Help Scout (5 users, 100 contacts a month) and Tidio (50 conversations a month) have free plans.
What is the best Intercom alternative for startups?
For an early team on a small budget, Help Scout’s free plan or Tidio’s Starter ($24.17 a month billed yearly for 10 seats) keep costs low. If your users message you on WhatsApp, look at respond.io or SleekFlow. Intercom also runs an Early Stage program; its pricing page advertised “Startups get 93% off” when we checked.
What is an Intercom “outcome”?
An outcome is Intercom’s billing unit for Fin AI Agent: a conversation where Fin resolves the question or completes the task without a human taking over. Zendesk and Help Scout bill the same way and call it a resolution, while Freshdesk counts sessions and Tidio counts AI conversations.
